He believes that he was around twenty-seven and twenty-eight when he began writing his narrative - he overheard his master say he was about seventeen years of age during 1835. Fredericks father was a white man who could have been his master but he never found out. Education was of utmost importance in his life. He received his first lesson while living with Mr. and Mrs. Auld. Sophia Auld, Fredericks mistress, was very humane to him and spent time teaching him the A, B, Cs. After he mastered this, she assisted him in spelling three and four letter words. At this point in his lesson Mr. Auld encountered what his wife was doing for Frederick and forbid her to continue. He believed that if you give a nigger an inch, he will take an ell and continuing with learning would spoil the best nigger in the world. The masters felt that an ignorant slave formed a choice slave and any beneficial learning would damage the slave and therefore be futile to his master. His next step on the road to success was during his seven years living with Master Hughs family. Frederick would make friends with as many white boys as he possibly could on the street. His new friends would be transformed into teachers. When he could, Frederick carried bread on him as a means of trade to the famished kids for knowledge. He would also carry a book anytime he had an errand to run. The errand would be completed quickly, allowing extra study time. When Frederick was working in Durgin and Baileys ship-yard he would notice timber marked with various letters. He soon discovered how the letters matched the type of wood and the names of these letters. Any boy he met that could write he would challenge them to a writing contest. Frederick would use the letters he recently learned and told the child to challenge that. He then copied the Italics in Websters Spelling Book until he knew them well. All this hard work and years of practice gave Frederick the knowledge to write. After his relocation to Mr. Freeland, who was the owner of two slaves, Frederick devoted his Sundays teaching these two and other slaves how to read. Frederick heard the word abolitionists a few times but it wasnt for a while until he found out what it meant. If a slave succeeded in escaping from his Master or performing a radical action such as burning a barn or killing his Master, it was considered to be a form of abolition. One day while running an errand, Frederick ran into two Irishmen hard at work. Frederick assisted the Irishmen and soon after they asked if he was a slave. The men then advised Frederick to run away to the north to find friends and freedom. Ever since this encounter he has dreamed of the day he could safely escape. An attempt to carry out his dreams surfaced during his stay with Master Thomas. He did not attempt to escape, however he regrets not doing so since the chances of succeeding are ten times greater from the city than from the country. Anthony, one of Fredericks two masters, was not a humane slaveholder. Frederick was awakened habitually by the sounds of his own aunt being whipped repeatedly because she was caught away for the evening with a man. Slaves, when unhappy, sing songs to help drown their sorrow. Frederick would often sing for this purpose, and not to express his happiness as some slaves also do. The men and women slaves received eight pounds of pork or fish and one bushel of corn meal monthly. On a yearly basis, they received very little along the lines of clothing. The human body needs many external substances to survive. We need air, food, and water. However, these substances are not readily absorbed by the body through initial intake. For example, food that is eaten and digested is not yet used to fuel the body’s billions of cells. The nutrients that have been processed need to be transported to each cell in the body in order for them to be used. This is one of the jobs of the circulatory system. The circulatory system is tasked with carrying the important substances that the body needs where they are needed (Hillendale Health, 2007). Furthermore, the system is also responsible for carrying some of the wastes from the cells such as carbon dioxide, away from the cells to be expelled by the body (Delos Johnson, 2006). This cycle of carrying nutrients to body cells and carrying wastes from th em is a way by which the system contributes to the maintenance of physiological homeostasis. Another way that it contributes to homeostasis is by helping maintain the temperature of the body. Without oxygen to burn, the cells in the body will become cold and eventually die (Delos Johnson, 2006). Thus, oxygenated blood carries oxygen to the cells and releases it in order to maintain homeostatic temperature. Last but not the least, the circulatory system also maintains homeostasis by fighting off outside threats that have infiltrated the body. White blood cells which also travel through the system fight back diseases and help keep the body healthy and they need the circulatory system for them to be able to reach the places in the body where particular bacteria are doing damage (Delos Johnson, 2007). Afterwards, the processed food is transported through the small intestines where it is further digested. The small intestine’s inner walls are covered with microscopic finger-like projections called villi which are primarily responsible for taking the nutrients from the digested food and transferring them to the bloodstream where they are carried to the rest of the body (Maton et. al., 1993). Thus, the digestive system and the circulatory system work closely together to nourish the body with food and drink. The circulatory system also works closely with the respiratory system. We take in air through our nose and from there it travels to our lungs. From there, pulmonary arteries which are a part of the circulatory system carries oxygen-depleted blood to absorb more oxygen while releasing the carbon dioxide that it has accumulated from the cells that it delivered nutrients to (Maton et. al., 1993). Of course, the circulatory system takes blood containing nutrients and oxygen to other organ systems of the body in order to enable them to continue functioning. The blood carries nutrients to our muscles, our sensory organs, our brain, and all other parts of our body that need it (Maton, 2003). Parts and functions The Heart   It is a powerful muscle that pumps the blood through the entire circulatory system (Hillendale Health, 2007). The Blood It is the main substance that flows throughout the circulatory system. There are red blood cells and white blood cells that both travel through the circulatory system (Hillendale Health, 2007). Plasma which is the liquid part of the blood carries both these blood cells through the system (Hillendale Health, 2007). The red blood cells carry nutrients from the small intestine and oxygen from the lungs to the cells all over the body (Hillendale Health, 2007). They are also the ones that carry carbon dioxide away from body cells and back to the lungs to be released as waste (Hillendale Health, 2007). The white blood cells travel to areas where harmful germs are infecting body cells and fight those foreign elements to keep the body healthy (Hillendale Health, 2007). There are also platelets found in the bloodstream which acts to help stop bleeding whenever the body gets wounded (Hillendale Health, 2007). For example, whenever we cut ourselves on some sharp object and bleed, the platelets stick to where we cut ourselves and attract more platelets to do the same. This plugs out the wound so that the bleeding stops. The Blood Vessels The blood vessels are the tubes where the blood passes through. There are three types of blood vessels which are arteries, veins, and capillaries (Hillendale Health, 2007). The arteries are blood vessels that carrying oxygenated blood away from the heart while veins carry blood back to the heart (Hillendale Health, 2007). Capillaries are very tiny blood vessels that serve as connections between arteries and veins (Hillendale Health, 2007). It is a mesh of muscle cells that are joined together by contiguous cytoplasmic bridges (Maton et. al., 1993). Tissues found on the heart’s walls are unique because they have qualities both of smooth muscle tissues and skeletal muscle tissues. The heart is covered by a protective sac called the pericardium (Maton et. al., 1993). The pericardium itself is composed of two parts. The fibrous pericardium is made of dense fibrous connective tissue that serves as the heart’s outer protection while the serous pericardium contains fluid that eases friction generated by heart contractions thus protecting the heart from friction caused by its own beating (Maton et. al., 1993). The right atrium is situated on the right side of the heart where the veins carrying deoxygenated blood are found. This is so that the right atrium can collect the deoxygenated blood and pass it through the heart which pumps it by the right ventricle to the lungs to be oxygenated once more (Maton et. al., 1993). After the blood is oxygenated by the lungs, it goes back to the heart through the left atrium and is pumped by the heart through the left ventricle to the rest of the body. It should be noted that the muscle wall that surrounds the left ventricle is thicker than the wall surrounding the right ventricle. This is because it is harder to pump blood to the rest of the body than to just pump it to the lungs and back (Maton et. al., 1993). Hence, thicker muscle means that the left ventricle is more powerful in pumping blood than the right ventricle. Hypertensive heart disease   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   This diseases pertains to complications caused by arterial hypertension that affects the heart (eMedicine, 2007). Arterial hypertension which is more commonly known as high blood pressure is a condition wherein the pressure of the blood being pumped through the circulatory system is steadily increasing (eMedicine, 2007). This happens due to a variety of factors. Excessive intake of fat can clog up arteries and thus make it more difficult for blood to pass through. Thus, this makes the pressure of blood passing through the arteries increase. Because of the heightened pressure, the arterial walls are subjected to greater strain (Lip et. al., 2000). This can be imagined by visualizing a hose whose channel has been partially blocked. Fluid passing through that hose exerts more pressure on the hose walls and threatens to rupture the hose. In the same way, too much clogging in the arteries can cause pressure to build so much that it could ruptur e the arteries. Once this condition is elevated to dangerous levels, the heart gets affected by the imbalance in the pressure and hypertensive heart disease is developed (Lip et. al., 2000). The disease causes the heart to be strained more and more and may eventually cause it to breakdown and fail. The pressure can also burst blood vessels which can also damage the system. People suffering from this disease are easily fatigued due to the excessive work that the heart is coping with from the increased blood pressure (eMedicine, 2007). They would also have an irregular pulse, have difficulty sleeping, and feel a greater need to urinate at night (eMedicine 2007). The Rights to Bear Arms   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Gun control is a very controversial issue among society at present. Many feel guns are the cause of a great amount of crime. This has been an especially popular topic recently in lieu of the shooting at Columbine and other high schools across the country. Are these crimes reason to take away our freedom to bear arms? I do not believe so. The average person uses guns mainly as a means of protection. If limitations are placed on guns, they will only stop the average American from obtaining a gun. The real criminals out there will still be able to obtain guns through the black market. Every American should have the right to protect them self. The second amendment to the constitution of the United States says, â€Å"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.†1 This amendment enforced a practice that had been occurring in America for years. When the constitution was forming, there was not a large standing army. Many inhabitants were minutemen, who needed a gun to help protect society; this is why the militia was mentioned in the amendment. The militia clause is merely a rationale for preserving the right.1 Even if today's well-regulated militia were the National Guard, the Second Amendment still protects an individual right to keep and bear arms.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Many people feel this amendment should be changed, or more restrictions should be placed on people who want to purchase guns. Fatal gun accidents declined by almost sixty percent from 1975 to 1995, even though the number of guns per capita increased by almost forty percent.2 The cart below shows that a number of crimes have started decreasing, even though sales in guns has increased. Recently, the media has shown many incidents of shootings in schools. This is nothing new, as the media makes it out to be. Schools have had trouble with crime for many years. Years ago metal detectors were installed in schools across the nation to stop violence in schools. These detectors were placed because there was a problem in the past. Crime related to guns has, in fact, gone down. The reality does not... ...were to happen here. Although we are a democracy, as more freedoms are taken away, we move farther and farther away from the very idea of America. The history of mankind has many examples of what happens when the state becomes too powerful and there is no check on it by an armed population.5 It is impossible for the government to control the sales of gun through the black market, which provides these dangerous weapons to murders and drug dealers. In both situations, there were people who confessed even though they had no relation to the crime at all. The majority, however, valued their morals and refused to give into political pressure by lying. This is shown as abuse of power. The puritans were a group of English Protestants in the 16th and 17th century. The entire plot of the novel is moulded by the repressive Puritan society. Like many puritan women, Elizabeth Proctor is dutiful and loves her husband dearly. Yet, Elizabeth is hurt by the fact that her husband was having an affair with their â€Å"strikingly beautiful† young servant (Abigail). She finds it hard to show emotion and this affects her relationship with John Proctor vastly. In Act One we can see that there is ‘heat’ and ‘passion’ between John and Elizabeth. When Abigail says, ‘I know how you clutched my back behind your house and sweated like a stallion whenever I come near! ’ She’s saying that John still lusts after her, breaking into a sweat when he sees her. She’s holding the affair over his head and reminding him how he has sinned would like to sin again. We can see that Abigail has real feelings for John and they have a sexual attraction between them. With Abigail being a 17 year old puritan girl and John being a married man, this is clearly outrageous and shows that he was prepared to break his rules. Proctor convinced himself he was a sinful man that had done wrong, and to have respect for himself once again, he must break off all ties with Abigail. When Abigail mentioned to Proctor the relationship she and he once had, he said to her, â€Å"No, no, Abby. That’s done with,† and, â€Å"Abby, you’ll put it out of mind. I’ll not be comin’ for you more. Even when Abigail tried to persuade Proctor to admit his love for her, he still denied it and claimed he had no love for her any longer. In all of Abigail’s persuasion to try to get him to admit his love for her, Proctor replied, â€Å"Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind. We never touched, Abby. † Proctor saying to Abigail that they never touched was his way of trying to get through to her that the relationship between the both of them had to end here. In Proctor’s mind, saying that to Abigail was a finalization of their affair and gave him the closure that he needed to truly forget what he and Abigail had between them. The affair between Proctor and Abigail also had made his love for Elizabeth grow stronger. The guilt of the affair made him realize how Elizabeth was a good woman and deserved more than a cheating husband, and he refused to allow Abigail to speak wickedly about her. Abigail said bitterly to Proctor, â€Å"Oh, I marvel how such a strong man may let such a sickly wife be -,† in which he interrupted angrily with, â€Å"You’ll speak nothin’ of Elizabeth! Abigail, realising the respect he now had for Elizabeth as to not let her speak of Elizabeth in such a manner, then tried to convince Proctor otherwise, saying, â€Å"She is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me! She is a cold, snivelling woman†¦ † Elizabeth is shown as a ‘cold’ woman whereas Abigail and Proctor have ‘heat’ – ‘no wintry man’. â€Å"The Nightingale and the Rose† by Oscar Wilde Situational Irony is very evident in â€Å"The Nightingale and the Rose†. The outcome of the story is far from what readers expect. First, the readers would assume that there is actually true love between the student and the Professor’s daughter and that the in the end of a story lies a happy ending for the two. From the introduction to almost the end of the story (except the last 6 paragraphs from 57-62), the author tries to establish that the story is about true love- understanding it, finding it, and sacrificing to get it. From paragraph 3, the student gives us the impression that he has a deeper understanding or meaning for true happiness, he thinks that happiness must not depend on such a little thing like a single red rose. Furthermore in paragraphs 5, 7 and 37, we see how the student’s life seems to revolve around the Professor’s daughter. More than anything, he wants to find this red rose that will allow him to share a dance with this girl and be able to profess his â€Å"true love† for her because not being able to do so will break his heart [#57: â€Å"But there is no red rose in my garden, so I shall sit lonely and she will pass me by. She will have no heed of me, and my heart will break† and he flung himself down on the grass and buried his face in his hands, and wept]. However, there is a great irony waiting in the end of the story. As we are given hope that the impossible might be possible when the student is able to get a red rose, unexpectedly, as he gives it to the girl, they still do not share a romantic moment together. Rather, the girl seems indifferent [paragraphs 57-60], saying that she wouldn’t go the ball because she doesn’t like her dress and not even showing the smallest appreciation for the red rose she requested. In these same paragraphs, we also see how she really has a materialistic view on â€Å"love†. She liked the red rose because it was a flower that was sure to cost a lot yet she loses interest in it when she gets real jewels that cost more than the flower. In paragraphs 59-62, we also see a great change in the student who was supposedly had deep feelings for the girl and who was expected to fight for his love. However in the end, after he hears what the girl had said, he just snaps, throws the red rose he had given so much time inding, easily gets over the girl he â€Å"loved† and moped about and suddenly gives a different view on love- [#6162: â€Å"what a silly thing love is. It is not half as useful as logic. † So he returns to his room, pulled out a great dusty book and began to read]. â€Å"The Nightingale and the Rose† leads the readers to think that it is about true love and there is actually such a thing as true love however, as we read further, we realize that as we were expecting a story of true love and happiness, ironically, we actually get a story of unrequited love and materialistic happiness. As explained, the supposed â€Å"love† between the student and the girl proves to be just infatuation, a shallow love based on materialistic happiness. Secondly, the story’s irony lies on the relationship between the nightingale and the student. Throughout the story, we see how the nightingale thinks that she is finally being able to witness true love and does all she can to help the student and his dream girl have their happy ending. She is one with the sorrow that the student feels tries to find the red rose that will be the supposed key to the happiness of the two people [paragraph 6, 13-29]. This nightingale also agrees to sacrifice his life for what she sees is â€Å"true love† between the student and the professor’s daughter [#31: â€Å"Death is a great price to pay for a red rose and life is dear to all†¦Yet love is better than life, and what is the heart of a bird compared to the heart of a man? †]. One irony here is that it seems to us that the only character that gives pure and unconditional love in the story is the nightingale. She was ready to give up her life for the student’s rose. It is quite intriguing to see that the one character that really shows true love is not repaid even the slightest bit. The bird gives up his life and yet the student doesn’t even notice its dead body lying in the long grass nor does he know how much the bird had to suffer for that single rose which he will only in the end throw. Another irony is that the nightingale sacrifices his life for love and happiness, which turns up to be useless and shallow [#34: â€Å"be happy; you shall have your red rose. I will build it out of music by moonlight and stain it with my own heart’s-blood. All I ask of you in return is that you will be a true lover, for love is wiser than Philosophy and mightier than power]. We also see the irony in that exact line, the nightingale expects that the student will appreciate, understand and prioritize love above anything else yet in the end of the story, the exact opposite happens. What the nightingale did not wish to happen, happened. Power and Philosophy triumphed over love. [#60: â€Å"who are you? Only a student. What may seem as true love may turn out to be nothing but selfish desire that blinds people from what is real. This was seen in â€Å"The nightingale and the rose†, the story gives the readers the idealistic feel that a true love will develop but in the end of the story, we see that realistically, this isn’t how life and love always turns up. She doesnt seem to be in the best of moods at first, but as soon as she sees me she cant help but grin, for we hadnt seen each other in months. She takes a seat beside me on the small yet comfortable couch in the center of her living room. As she had Just gotten off of work she remains in her work clothes, which consists of a classy black polo. Khaki pants, and a pair of dainty black flats. I let her relax for a couple moments and then I begin asking her questions about her past and high school experience. She then begins fondly reminiscing on her former memories of the activities, goals, and such that she had and took part in throughout high school. She took part in JROTC for two years, and in MECHA for all four years serving as president her senior ear as well. l tried to dip my toes in as many extra curricular activities as I could. I just loved being involved in extra curricular activities because in a way, they give you a sense of belonging, she says warmly. Under her breath, seeming as if she didnt mean for me to hear her, she admits that DECA was her favorite of the activities she was involved in. However, she noticed that I caught what she said and fondly said, l loved the people I was with in DECA, managing and organizing events such as MORP and I Just loved business in general. She feels that she lived her high school life to ullest extra curricular activity-wise however she regrets not attending some big events that took place while she was in high school. l do wish that I would have gone school to its fullest, however there was always a reason behind everything that I did and did not attend and to this day I stand by those choices. Brianna begins to dig deep as she recalls her fondest memory throughout her entire high school career. Her proudest and most memorable moment in high school was in her senior year when she happened to take 4th place at the State DECA Conference. l took 4th place in entrepreneurship written, which is one of the ategories, and I was the only one to compete by myself that year, writing a 30-page business manual and presenting it, she says humbly. Taking 4th at the State Conference brought her to the National Conference in Orlando, Florida. l was the only one from my high school that had made it to Nationals that year and it was nice to see how my 30-page business manual actually paid off in the end, and was totally worth the hard work and determination it entailed. With this achievement in mind, reminds her of some not necessarily downfalls that took place in high school, but something that she isnt particularly proud of. That certain something happens to be procrastination. Procrastination played a heavy role in her high school career because once she procrastinated something for the first time; it became a bad habit of hers. With indignity, she put her head down and said, Lets Just say I put the pr0 in procrastination. She looks back on one of her least proud moments that not surprisingly, had everything to do with procrastination. In my Junior year, I had a poster-presentation due in my fifth hour class, and on that very day that it was due I purchased a poster board from the high school in my first hour. In my first through ourth hour, I rushed through it and completed it and turned it in the board on time in my fifth hour and surprisingly ended up receiving a 100%. She felt that in this situation, she Just got lucky and highly suggests to everyone to not procrastinate for there are some but very few cases in which it may work out. I tried to consume as much information as I possibly could, and about midway through our discussion, it became so that she is now part of my motivation to obtain a successful yet fun high school experience. Currently, I have the same goal that Brianna once had, which is to get a 4. 0 GPA and letter in academics and to make her nd myself proud, I am going to try my hardest and push myself further than she did to achieve that goal. Also knowing that Brianna regrets not attending massive events such as dances or Friday-night football games, I now know that I should not miss out on such events, as I will most likely regret not going later on in life. Just as my sister did, I hope to take part in plenty of extra-curricular activities and hopefully, I plan to accomplish as much as she did in the clubs she took part in. Perhaps if I get into DECA my sophomore year I can work my way up and make it to the National Conference Just as she did. It became very clear to me that Brianna whom is my older sister is an inspiration to me in a way because she gives me motivation to achieve greatness and hope that there is always a new tomorrow. Its relieving in a sense to know that I will overcome the difficulties that I will be and am currently facing in high school. I began wrapping it up as I transcribed her last few comments, and thanked her for the time she took out her day to do this interview. I hope to use this information she gave me wisely and try to learn from what took place in her high school experience to make mine even more enjoyable.
